1. Hot Ice

This video shows how to make a supersaturated solution of sodium ethanoate (acetate). Supersaturated solutions crystallise with the slightest touch or by use of a “seed” crystal. Look closely at the person’s finger when they touch the surface of the saturated solution. What can you see?

2. The alkali metals

This video clip from Brainiac is good fun. It shows the reactivity of a selection of the Group I and II metals sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium. Why are these metals so reactive? What do they have in common?

3. Thermite reactions

When finely powdered aluminium is mixed with powdered ion(III) oxide (commonly known as rust) thermite has been made. Thermite reacts explosively with air to generate enormous amounts of heat energy, as can be seen in this Brainiac video clip. Reactions that release energy are called “exothermic”.

4. Elephant toothpaste

This reaction shows the extraordinary effect the use of a catalyst can have on the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The catalyst used in manganese(IV) oxide, MnO2.
